對社會學家而言，當代婚姻是一個爭論的空間。一般人以為婚姻純屬一種很私人的領域，兩個人為達到個人滿意所建立的情感關係。但事實上，婚姻並不是單純兩位配偶的總和而已。婚姻其實是一種由法律、道德和常理所定義的關係。
